The month of May began with the beatification of Pope John Paul II. Here at the home, we have marked this holy occasion with prayers and shared memories.
On the eve of the beatification, Sisters and Residents gathered for a holy hour, along with recitation of the luminous mysteries of the rosary that were instituted by Pope John Paul II. On the morning of the beatification, the Sisters arose during the early morning hours to watch live coverage of the beatification Mass. After viewing the coverage, Sr. George spoke of her admiration for Blessed Pope John Paul II, “We think he is marvelous. A holy man. A wonderful example for us all.”
During this month, memories of Blessed Pope John Paul II, from his pontificate to his deep life of prayer, have been shared by Sisters, staff and Residents. Activities assistant, Sarah Rolfes, gave a presentation to the Residents about her semester of study in Rome at the time of the death of Pope John Paul II and election of Pope Benedict XVI. Her photos and memories brought these poignant moments to life.
Little moments of reflection continue, as Residents pause at a picture of Blessed Pope John Paul II on display in our lobby. Recently, Resident, Mary Ann Schneider shared her favorite memory: “When I think of John Paul II, I remember the message he gave his whole life to the young and the elderly, “Be not afraid.” These words describe Blessed Pope John Paul II’s legacy of love for all of us.
