Taking it Day by Day
By Sarah Steffen
We have only been through a few months of 2020 and it has already been a year to remember. Everywhere you turn, you are probably bombarded with news, facts, and all things related to the Coronavirus outbreak. Times have not been easy but we should remember that we are all experiencing these hardships together.
Our Home has been on “lockdown” for over a month now. For us that means no one other than essential staff is permitted in the building and Residents are not permitted to leave their floors. You can imagine what this might feel like for our Residents. The normal buzz of activity is not flowing through our halls. We must follow these guidelines to try to keep the virus from affecting anyone in the building but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun! (Following the social distancing guidelines of course!)
A big shout out is due to our nurses, aides, housekeepers, kitchen, medical, and administrative staff for their hard work daily. We could not get through this without them, that is for sure!
Another round of applause should go to our Activity Department, Mandy and Barry, our Social Worker, Ania, and our Music Therapist, Courtney. These four people have been working hard to provide entertainment and enlightenment to our Residents in unique ways. Hallway Happy Hours are happening for our independent residents maintaining social distancing but cheers through the air as people wave and shout hello from doorways. Hallway games so Residents can still shout out BINGO from separate corners of each floor. Guitar playing, video calls with friends and family, snack carts, ice cream sundaes, popcorn machine, daily puzzles and visits, afternoon movies broadcast to rooms, and anything else we can think of to make sure smiles are still showing!
These weeks have not been easy. Each day is different as we make sure to listen and follow Ohio Health guidelines closely. We are all in this together and even though we are a bit confined to the building, we are still smiling and still laughing. We are taking this pandemic day by day and soon enough we will emerge even stronger.
